Tutors and Tuition services

As final examinations get closer, many secondary students start thinking about ways in which to improve their examination performance. Private tutors are available through tuition centers or through private recommendation at a cost of $40.00 – $60.00. Most tuition sessions are 1 hour in length and are focused on the learning areas that you choose. Private tuition can be helpful in assisting you to better understand concepts and ideas but it can become very expensive especially if you see the tutor on a regular basis. If you are thinking about private tuition there are some things that you need to consider. First, ask yourself whether you have explored all of the options available to you at school.

Most teachers in secondary schools are more than happy to spend extra time with individuals or small groups. Some schools have special classes at lunch time or after school where you can ask questions or request extra assistance. Make sure that your tutor is well qualified in the subject area that you have chosen. Ask about their qualifications and experience. You should also consider the time taken in attending a tuition session; how far do you have to travel? Do the hours of combined travel and tuition eat into valuable study time? You must also consider the cost. At the end of each term year 11 and year 12 students have the option of attending tuition courses through the school holidays.

Most subject areas are offered in these sessions and you can choose the sessions you wish to attend depending on the course material presented. These sessions as with private tutors can be expensive and they are certainly time consuming because most classes run for three hours. Some students will tell you that a private tutor or holiday tuition has helped them a lot others will say it has been a waste of time and money.

Think carefully and look at the options before you make a decision. You may better improve your examination performance by first raising areas of difficulty with your teachers and then putting in extra study time at home to reinforce your learning. There is no short cut to success. Tutors can help but they are not always the answer.

I agree tutors are not always the best way. You can spend a lot of money for not much value.
