Students in Australian secondary schools have access to a range of services to help them when they find themselves in difficult situations. It is not uncommon for students to experience physical and emotional problems as a result of personal relationships or issues that may arise at home or at school. You may be finding your studies difficult or feel confused about choosing subjects.

Asking Questions

Students who come to Australia from Asian countries notice a big difference in the way teachers manage the classroom. Australian education uses a student centred learning approach. Many schools in Asian countries have a teacher centred learning environment. Students in Australian classrooms are expected to participate in discussions, offer opinions and ask questions. If there is something that you have heard or read but are not sure about, teachers expect you to ask for help or further explanation.

Homework

For students in middle and senior secondary school homework is a constant part of school life.

Most schools have a homework policy which clearly sets out how much homework is appropriate for each year level. Students in year 11 for example are expected to complete more homework than students in year 9. Make sure that you know what the homework policy is for your year level. Some schools will also issue a homework timetable which indicates to students the subjects that are to be studied on particular nights of the week.
