Sample ESL Study Plans

ESL courses in South Australia at both stage 1 and stage 2 require students to complete a range of assessment tasks to demonstrate their acquired skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in English. There is no prescribed schedule for the completion of these tasks. Semester and full year programs can be arranged to best suit both teachers and students.

In 2010 teachers must respond to changes that the SACE Board have made to the stage 1 ESL course. Changes have also been made to the stage 2 ESL course which will be implemented in 2011.

At stage 1, English as a Second Language can be studied as a 10-credit subject or a 20-credit subject. The study program is focused on student responses to, and composition of oral and written texts which are drawn from a range of genres and situations. Study programs are constructed in three specific areas; text production, communication and investigation. A student’s achievement in this subject is measured within four design criteria and against 5 performance standards reported as grades A-E.
