It is difficult to define ‘Australian food’. The outdoor B.B.Q. and the meat pie are certainly recognized as being distinctly Australian, but most other foods have been influenced by the many different cultures that make up the Australian population.
Australian cuisine has developed a uniqueness not to be found anywhere else in the world. There are strong European and Asian influences. Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Mexican, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Malaysian restaurants are plentiful in the capital cities. Foods cooked in the home also reflect the multi-cultural nature of Australian society.
Australian’s enjoy access to fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the year. There are many Asian markets which provide fresh produce and ingredients for the many Asian dishes that Australians have come to enjoy. Fish, chicken and a variety of red meats are readily available at reasonable prices. Dairy produce; milk, cheeses and yoghurt are also Australian favorites and high quality products are available at affordable prices.
Australian’s eat well and while they enjoy eating outdoors or visiting restaurants most families still eat most meals at home. The main meal of the day is dinner which is usually served between 6.00pm and 8.00pm in the evening. The meal consists of one or two courses comprising a meat and vegetable dish followed by fruit or something sweet.
Lunch is given less attention and maybe a sandwich, a small salad, a piece of fruit along with something to drink. At breakfast eggs may be served or cereal and fruit, with coffee and tea being the common beverages. Breakfast is usually the most rushed meal of the day and many Australian’s eat as they commute to work.
School students would commonly take their lunch to school from home but they also have access to food from the school canteen at reasonable prices. A growing number of Australians choose a vegetarian diet or a diet which consists of only fish, fruit and vegetables. Most restaurants cater for vegetarian diets as well as customers who may have a particular food sensitivity or allergy. There is certainly a diverse range of food choices and something to suit everyone.
