Getting around in the major cities is not difficult. Public transport systems are well developed and generally very reliable. Sydney has an underground train system which enables quick and easy movement around the city area. Other trains connect to most of the suburban areas and where trains are not available buses are. There is also a regular ferry service which moves people from one side of the Harbor to the other and to the many different harbor side suburbs.
Moving around in Melbourne is also easy to manage. It does not have trains within the city but an extensive tram network which will take you almost anywhere you want to go. There are also buses and trains which connect to the suburban areas. Taxis are readily available and quite cheap.
Adelaide has trains, buses and one tram. Buses are available around the city area; some buses are free to assist commuters in moving from one side of the city to the other. Adelaide has been planned on a grid system which makes finding your way around very easy. Buses and trains connect to all of the suburban areas. Adelaide is a much smaller city than Sydney and Melbourne which generally makes commuting from work or school to home quite easy.
In Canberra buses are the main means of public transport. There are trains which travel regularly between Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne but inner city and suburban travel is available via bus.
In Brisbane buses are also the main mode of transport. Trains are available to connect with suburban areas and a regular train service exists between Brisbane and Sydney. Brisbane’s bus service is very reliable and many express services operate at peak hour.
Perth has bus, train and ferry services. Bus services are very efficient and reasonably priced. Trains are available for connection to most of the suburban areas and like Adelaide Perth has free bus services available in and around the city centre.
Hobart has no rail services but buses connect to the suburban areas and most of the local towns.
All of the major cities in Australia have regular flight services. Domestic flights between the major cities are frequent and quite cost effective. Cheaper fares are available when bookings are made in advance. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide all have regular international services as well.
Trains connect the major cities and are usually cheaper than flights but they require more time.
